Today, I will be talking about one marketing technique I discovered which could return good return on investment on my business. That marketing technique is Reverse Marketing.
Reverse Marketing – What is it?
Reverse Marketing is a marketing strategy wherein the customer is the one who seeks the business, rather than the marketer seeking the customers. Technically, Reverse Marketing is basically Attraction Marketing. While other marketing strategies persuade people to buy to them, Reverse Marketing does not. It mainly presents the solutions to the problems, but never asks them to buy.
Why Reverse Marketing Works
Being in the marketing industry for a little long now, I have seen and read different success stories involving Reverse Marketing. When I was a newbie, I thought the only way to close sales was to pitch, beg and hardsell. Phew, I was so glad I didn’t have to do those activities to close sales. Believing that Reverse Marketing really works may seem odd, but it really does. Why? Well, all of us could have experienced being marketed by people who push us to buy their products because if we don’t, unpleasant things would happen to us. This marketing strategy sounds like a threat, and customers do not like it. Instead of having customers flock, they flee. We do not want to be told what we need to do or buy, especially in a threatening manner. With Reverse Marketing, more and more people are beginning to see the results this strategy can bring and are implementing it in their business.
Example of Reverse Marketing
At this point, you may be wondering if you have ever come across a firm that uses Reverse Marketing in attracting leads, or if you have ever been convinced to buy on that firm without you knowing that they are actually using Reverse Marketing. And to ease up your understanding with this technique, I am giving you a very good example.
Imagine your business is about health and fitness and you are selling slimming pills. You could see thousands of competitors online and offline. How are you going to make yourself noticeable and market to people? You could do two ways:
- Tell them about your products and convince them to really buy, like what other health and fitness firms are also doing, or
- Give them free tips and advice on how to stay healthy and fit without selling your products at all.
If you are using Reverse Marketing, you would do the latter.
Imagine that your target audience is into health and fitness. When you give free tips and advice, you may highlight hidden problems they are facing but may not be aware of. Educated people makes better customers, especially when you’re the one that give them the new knowledge of the hidden problems they face. They will be more inclined to find a solution to solve that problem.
You on the other hand, leverage on the benefits of Reverse Marketing and share your experience and position your solution right in front of the problems you highlighted. You’re going to make better connection between you and your audience. So, when they decided to find a solution to solve the problem, whom would they turn to? It could be you.
